Cantonese opera is originated from southern opera (南戏) and appeared in guangdong and guangxi since the jiajing (嘉靖) period of the Ming dynasty.

      In the late 19th century, some cantonese opera artists came to Hong Kong from guangzhou to make a living.

      During the second world war (1939-1945), a large number of cantonese opera workers migrated to Hong Kong.
